Latest Proac Response D38

Finally, my long awaited Proac Response D38 has arrived. I have chosen the Ebony finish for better contrast and texture (but have to pay a few more K).

However, the only amplifier that can drive the Proac Response D38 is my Denon POA power amplifier (can support down to 4Ohms). The pre-amp is my Denon AVC-A1HDA connected to Denon POA via Van Den Hul D102 MK III interconnect (made in EU). Power cords are top of the line from Van Den Hul, the mainstream terminated with wattgate IEC plugs. Look how tiny Proac Studio 140 MKII stands next to the Proac Response D38!! Proac D38 weighs a massive 40 over KGs each!!

Connection from the Denon POA to Proac response D38 is a pair of Van Den Hul MC Magnum Hybrid speaker cables (terminated with WBT banana plugs) for the lower end. Higher end is connected using Van Den Hul CS122 Hybrid speaker cable (terminated with QED banana plugs).

Noticed from the previous post, everything now sits on a new hifi rack. It's a custom made rack with multi-layers plywood being laminated with precision. I have chosen not to laminate the surface for a more natural look and feel.

The center speaker is Proac Response D Center, weighing a massive 25KG; a lot heavier than the Proac Studio 140 MKII floor stand speaker. Finishing is Ebony that matches well with the pair of Proac reponse D38.

Currently, I'm using the Proac response D38 and Proac response D center for both movie and music. Will bring in a higher end 2 channels system in later stage. All Proac response D series speakers are connected to the Denon POA power amp. Feeding the media and music to Denon AVC-A1HDA via Van Den Hul Orchid interconnect is the Oppo-BDP83 Special Edition that comes with 8 pieces of Sabre DAC.

Notice that is a set of Naim setup on the left. From top to bottom is Naim DAC, Naim XS intergrated Amplifier, Naim Flatcap power supply. While still waiting to restock my Naim CD XS, I am currently using Marantz KI Pearl SA CD Player as the transport feed via Van Den Hul digiCoupler 75ohm digital cable to the 4th connection on the Naim DAC. While Oppo is also connected via optical cable to Naim DAC on the 3rd input. So we can choose to listen on the following two setups:

1) Oppo BDP83SE -> VDH Orchid -> AVC-A1HDA-> POA -> Proac Response D38

2) Oppo BDP83SE -> VDH Digicoupler -> Naim DAC -> Van Den Hul D102 MKIII -> AVC-A1HDA -> POA -> Proac Response D38.

The backend filter is PS Audio Quintet (Still waiting for the release of PS Audio 5000 series power condition for the 220-240v market)

More acoustic treatment being applied to trap the bass at both upper corners. On the middle section, small pyramid has been used. Since my last post, I've treated the inner part of the ceiling with fiber glue to solve the internal rattering issue that I was facing all the while. It has since reduce the rattering sound down to 99.99% (quite happy with it).

I am confident this room can handle bigger speakers like the Proac Response D80 series with a powerful amplifier.

Denon 2311 & 3311

If you need more inputs, go for the Denon AVR2311 which provides 6 hdmi 1.4a input and a hdmi out. Also featuring HDMI 1.4a, it supports 3D video pass-through.

If you have dual displays (usually a TV and a projector), you must go with Denon AVR3311 featurings Six HDMI 1.4a input and two HDMI out. You can switch between displays during playback making things so much easier. Five of its HDMI ports are at the back of the receiver and one is located at the front for easy access.

A "Poor" Rich TV buyer

I feel sorry for those who had spent thousands of dollars on a TV regardless it being LCD, LED, Plasma and ended up watching RM5 "backup" DVD or even Astro. The recent release of Astro Beyond had triggered a lot of consumers in the market changing to new full HD LCD, LED and Plasma. But without any technical knowledge or what so ever, they went to a electrical shops and did some survey, price compare, listen to the salesman talking a bunch of ; most of the time rubbish and spend on something they don't usually need to play their low quality picture.

Maybe not in West Malaysia, but I notice here in Kuching, there are a lot of uncles and aunties buying new tv but in the end, complain about why the quality isn't as great as what they see in the electrical shop. Most of us know, you can't expect your RM15K 50" LED to give you superb quality when you are only playing RM5 DVD, or even the 480 or 720P Astro channels. In the end, you are paying for something that you don't use. It's like buying a Ferrari in Kuching but no place to drive. No doubt some people are buying to show their "status" rather than to show the Picture Quality. I feel sorry for them again.

There is a simple trick most electrical stores are pulling it on consumers. They use Media players like Tvix and popcorn to stream the media to their displayed LCD, LED and Plasma. Most customers see the great PQ and expect to get the same quality once they replace their old CRT. You can call it a scam or lie, but that's the only way to sell your TV and I can't blame the sales person because they are only trying to earn a living and the customers are trying to buy a new TV.

A Simple Check List prior to buying your TV:

What source are you planning to feed to your tv? (astro, dvd, bluray, media from internet (mkv, m2ts, rmvb, avi)
What is your budget? (<3K, <5K, 10K, etc)
Environment you are using the tv ? (living rooms with lots of windows and reflection? or dedicated av room?)
Sitting distance between you and your tv? (some people are buying 50" and sit 20 feet away; should have got 40" and sit 8 feet away)

Next time, before your friends and family want to buy a tv, ask them what kind of source they are going to feed to their new tv first. If they said RM5 DVD or Astro, ask them to save the money and spend it on Sound System!

The First Ultimate MK II by Van Den Hul

I've been selling audio interconnect aka RCA cables from most brand names since I started this business. I've never brought in anything above the retail price of RM1000 due to the spending power at my old shop (Wisma Satok). Late last year, I've been bringing in more higher end RCA interconnects especially from Van Den Hul. Tried The Wave, The Bay, The Name and D102 MKIII which are all very good quality interconnects. I personally like Van Den Hul product from the feel and touch. Most importantly the printed "Made in EU" words on the rubbery texture on most of their cables.

Although the price is slightly higher when compared to other brands I have in my shop, I highly recommend their product. The First Ultimate MKII interconnects from VDH is made of metal free material ..."carbon". So technically, it should last a life time since there's no metal for degrading over times. Out from the box, I plug hook it up to my Marantz KI series (Int Amp + SACD) together with Proac Studio140. It brings MUSIC to life !! The sound stage is awesome and very noticable that even a non-stereophile can notice it straight away.

Musical instruments seem to be closing into my ears. I can only describe The First Ultimate as being "MUSICAL" and great sound stage. Comparing to D102MKIII, it seems to lose a lot on the "warm"-nest. But if you are a 100% pure vocalist fan, you might not opt for it. Overall performance, it really bring your system to life. For a retail price of RM1,699 for the 1.5Meter pair, I think it is worth every penny provided your setup is worth more than 10K. For entry level system, I would recommend you getting either The Name or D102MKIII.

Marantz KI Pearl Integrated Amplifier and KI SA CD Player

Marantz 30th Anniversary KI Pearl by Ken Ishiwata was announced recently and it is now "discontinued" due to limited units being released. I only managed to grab my hands on several units before it all got sold out. Unless Marantz decided to release more unit (which I doubt they will), most enthusiats will need to search on the internet for it.

I still keep a pair in shop for display as collector's item (high bidder wins it...hehe). Out from the box, it doesn't look much difference from the 15S2 series. The SACD Player's weight isn't much heavier when I carried it. But the Integrated Amp is rather heavy when compared to the 15S2. Gotto becareful when handling these babies.

The Black makes the KI Pearl stands out from other Marantz premium series products. With the embedded ki pearl logo on it, you can't miss telling it's a KI Pearl even from far distance.

Performance wise, you can really tell the difference even when it's brand new without running them in. The high tone is well controlled, mid to bass tone is deeper and sounds warmer when compared to the 15S2. But we can't compare 15S2 with KI due to the huge gap in the price differences. Dvico TVIX 6600 Media Player

Coming to store is the new TVIX 6600 1080P Media player that supports HD Audio and Picture. M6500A is a great success and many customers have enjoyed high definition Picture & Sound through this small size media player. The superb performance and features have made it stands out in the media players market and being the best of the best player.

Now, TVIX has released their next model, ....the 6600. Simple, Less connections, Less complication, better performance and most of all nice and sleek design which will sits nicely next to your AVR.

As you can notice, the control buttons are better designed on the top where user can press the button easily unlike the previous 6500 model which is confusing for new users. 6600 buttons are straight forward like any other DVD players in the market. The hard drive bay sits higher inside the HDD bay. Nicer & Classy front panel design.

The rear of 6600 looks simple enough after the component rca inputs and s-video input are being removed. Who needs component and s-video while most of us are using LCD, plasma or projector that supports hdmi nowadays.

If you plan to buy this for your 20 year old CRT TV, I suggest you save the money and stick to the "roadside dvd service provider" if you get what I mean. And if you plan to run just AVI or RMVB or FLV and NOT play HD media, I also suggest you get the WDTV or other cheaper media player out there.

People who bought TVIX are those who wants to enjoy high definition Audio and Video; also those who has AVR that supports HDMI input and be able to decode HD Audio. TVIX has become the minimum requirement for most HT users.

Okay, too many same question have been raised... what should I get if I have a budget range between Mordaunt Short Mezzo Series and Proac Studio Series? I have the answer for you ... that's DALI Ikon Series.

Coming to our showroom is the 7.1 range of DALI (Danish speaker manufacturer) IKON Series.

The ideal front speakers will be the Ikon 6.

Ikon 6 comes with two 6.5" bass drivers housed in a diecast aluminum chassis crafted to provide free airflow from the backside of the cone and to minimize energy loss and compression within the drivers. Each long throw bass driver has an 80mm main magnet and a 70mm reverse-polarized magnet. This is to prevent distortion by establishing a stable magnetic flux density in the voice-coil gap, and to reduce stray magnetic fields. The bass driver cones are a mixture of paper and wood fibers constructed in a random patern in order to minimize resonances.

The unique design on Ikon 6 is the hybrid tweeter that has been trickled down from DALI's more expensive Euphonia and Helicon series. The tweeter module includes a cloth-dome unit that runs from 3kHz to beyond 20kHz, as well as DALI's famous ribbon that handles the range from 14kHz to beyond 30kHz. Both tweeters have been designed for wide horizontal dispersion and it's ideal for most listening direction.

Ikon 6 is naturally good for Home Cinema as well as Stereo Listening.

The Center coming to store is Vokal 2 Center.

Vokal 2 is built with reference to the other Ikon series with its unique ribbon tweeter and 2 bass drivers. It's dynamic when delivery dialogue from the movies to the listener.

Next comes the Ikon surround speakers, the Ikon 2 bookshelf speakers. Usually being used together with Stereo System. If you have the space for a pair of stands, Ikon 2 is a great surround speakers to go for. Occasionally, you can move it to the front for your stereo needs which will definately give you a different taste from your stereo system.

Finally, if you plan to setup a 7.1 system for your home, you may consider the Ikon On Wall series. The Ikon on wall series provides you with a fast and easy way of mounting surround or surround back speakers on the side or rear wall. Although performance won't be as great as the Ikon 2 bookshelf, it gives the user the flexibilty in setting up a 7.1 environment without having to place additional speaker stands on the side or rear which can be unnecessary

obstacle in your home.

Although it seems easy to mount the speaker on the wall anywhere you want, it is always a good idea to speak to our sound system consultant before you start drilling holes on your wall. Placement of on wall speakers are crucial to your 7.1 setup. Sitting position, room acoustic, possible reflection points and other factors in the room will cause your on wall speakers to sound different when not being place at the right position.

To fully utilize and unleash the performance of the DALI Ikon series, you will need at least Denon AVR 4310 for best performance. Although you can live with Denon AVR3808a, I will not recommend you saving just a couple of K which will eventually sacrifice your Sound Quality.

Most people are still thinking their brain out of getting either LCD or Plasma while most of us are already talking about how big our high contrast screen should be and at what setting on our projectors is giving the optimal Picture Quality. With more and more people moving from DVD to Bluray medias, they are more eager to get bigger display and the most economic way of getting a big display within creating a big hole in your pocket is using projector.

A lot of customers still think that projector needs to be operated in dark room and will not perform well. But once they get to see the performance of the budget HD ready projector from Optoma, their mindset changes. And the next question is usually "how much does this baby costs?"; and most of them are amazed when I revealed the price for them. Price is almost comparable like those 42" LCD or Plasma out in the market but giving you double or triple the size in viewing size.

Onkyo SR 606 AV Receiver

For those looking for Onkyo AV Receiver, you can always drop by to compare the performance between Onkyo, Denon and Marantz. Hear it before getting your hands on one of the AVR.

Onkyo is famous with heating issue. No doubt on Onkyo SR 606 but as long as you use it in air conditioned room, you should be safe. And if possible, get a Voltage regulator to regulate the input power for the AVR. Most Onkyo users recommend the use of computer fans to further cool down the temperature.

Sound test out from the box feels a little bit on the Flat side when compared to Denon and Marantz. Surround sound is not as distinctive as Denon and Marantz although it gives a bit more detail which is hardly audible if not paying attention to. One good thing about SR606 is the price vs features. You pay less but you get more on features and power if compared to Denon and Marantz. However, you have to really take good care of the temperature in extended usage. Hopefully you won't forget to switch it off :P

Another feature on the SR606 when compared to the same level Denon AVR-1909 and Marantz SR-5003 is the ability to preset the audio EQ for individual speaker channels. For folks who wish to do some tunning on the EQ especially on those users who have different brands of speaker. It allows you to tune the EQ for every channels to get the best audio uniformality. However, this feature is good for more adventurous users who know what they are doing or else you will probably just mess things up.

A month ago since I last posted. Have been busy testing Dvico products and several hifi products.Dvico player is definately a good investment for those who are interested in storing BD medias in the hard drive. I've customers who have huge collections of BD who bought this product and converted all hardcopy to softcopy for easy access when travelling. Though the size is not as compact as the "cheapo" RMVB players that you got from the normal computer stall for less than RM200, but the quality is unbeatable by any market media players.

Video quality on a Full HD displays regardless it being LCD or Plasma is hard to see the resolution drop. Unless you are to project it on a 120" full HD projector, you will not be able to get any flaw from the output. Audio is flawless as far as I can comment. It supports DTS-MA, DD-TrueHD, LPCM, DTS, DD, DD-EX, DTS-ES.

Loading speed is fast within 30 seconds to load a 1TB Western Digital SATAII 32mbCache filled with movies. Took around 1 minute to load two 1.5TB Seagate HDD via USB 2.0. It supports subtitle and audio track during playback. With 3rd party firmware loaded, you will be able to read BD rip with all menus intact.

Warning: Beware of CLONE Dvico product in the market which sells a lot cheaper and has no product warranty. Please check with Dvico authorized dealers before geting yourself one.

The Thrill of using Projector compared to LCD Plasma TV

The price of Plasma Display Panel and Liquid Crystal Display has been going down pretty fast since a year ago. More and more Full HD displays are out in the market for as low as RM3000 (32" to 40") or less.

For movie and home theater hobbist out there, PLEASE THINK TWICE before you put your hands on those Plasma and LCD. I strongly ask you fellows out there to consider getting a projector if you are planning to upgrade your TV to plasma/lcd.

I am not saying not to get Plasma or LCD. What I am trying to say is to recommend fellow home theater people to consider getting a projector rather than upgrading to LCD or Plasma.

Some people are saying projector lamp is too expensive when needed to replace after 3000 hours or so. Well, I am asking people who is building a home theater to get a Projector. If you are still Astro or TV1,2,3 person, I suggest you stick to the old big box tv or get yourself a cheap plasma tv if you are not planning to watch Full HD movies.

Why spend RM7000 ++ for a 200hz 40" LCD where you can get a 80" projector screen + HD ready projector (1080p upscaler) for less than RM4000. You save RM3000 where you can buy 3 - 4 lamps that gives you up to 10,000 - 12,000 hours more. If you are watching 1 movie per day (2 hours average), your 3000 lamp hours projector can last for 4 years (3000 / 720 hrs per yr). But Most importantly is the THRILL you are experiencing when watching a 40" Full HD LCD vs a 80" HD Ready projector. No matter how crisp or clear your full HD LCD is, you will never get the WOW FEELING when watching movie.

Some of you might be saying ...I can go for a 70" Full HD LCD and get the same feeling ..but 70" Full HD LCD will cost at least 10 times more than a 40" ...around RM70,000 + perhaps? With this kind of money, I can build you a dedicated home AV room fully equiped with RM30K power amp with THX Ultra2 + great 7.1 speakers. Plus another RM20K more, I can get you a FULL HD Capable Projector + 120" Full HD screen that is gurantteed to beat any full HD LCD or Plasma out there. But the most important thing is still the WOW and Thrill from big wide screen and good sound system.

Some of the pictures taken from a simple projection setup. Include a HDMI Projector that costs less than RM3000. Projector screen is custom made Fixed screen 73.5" 16:9 size. 5 meters HDMI cable. A little help from the upscaler engine found in the Marantz SR5003 AV Receiver. Player is 1080P Network Media Tank with 1TB Hard Drive running Bluray "Open Season" as shown in screen shots.

So, please think twice before upgrading your TV or lcd/plasma. Need further advice or enquiries, please stop by my shop to discuss on your ideal home theater setup.

1080P Media Players

I've been searching for 1080P Media player for months. Finally found one that has most functions and yet reliable (never hang). The size is small but enough to accomodate a 3.5" SATA hdd. I immediately pop a ntfs formatted 1TB hdd into the unit. Copied all my 1080p and 720p medias over.

Connect this NMT to my Marantz SR6003 via HDMI cable. Did some SETUP from the GUI and most importantly set the NMT to 1080P 60Hz output regardless if I am using a HD or Full HD display/projector. Graphic is flawless on my HD ready Plasma, Full HD LCD and HD/Full HD projector. Of course, the trick lies in the media file itself. I ripped a copy of my Bluray movie "Get Smart" using my PS3 (loaded with ydl). Copied the m2ts movie file that is 19GB over to my NMT. Play it.... n I got all the sound tracks where I can select using the remote control that comes with the NMT. It supports sub title but you need to use a remux tool to get the sub into another sub format and mux it back.

Quality: Full HD support is good enough even on Optoma Full HD 82 projector shooting at a 120" screen. Can't really see much difference between a high end pioneer bluray player that cost RM5000+. The black section is pretty good too although you might be able to notice slight noise if you stand 2 feet away from the 120" projected movie. On a 50" Full HD LCD or Plasma, you will not be able to tell the difference.

Sound: It supports DTS Master Audio and Dobly Digital TrueHD sound from the direct ripped m2ts BD movies. But I got some issues with several movies downloaded from the internet that were ripped, muxed and demuxed. So, I will not guaranttee it will work with all media but so far, I would say it can handle 90% of the medias.

Speed: Loading takes 1 minute from the time you switch the unit on to load a full 1TB HDD. After that, it only takes 3- 8 secs to navigate around the menu.

Remote: It supports fast forward up to 50x on DVD ISO rip and 8X on BD ripped. It also provides a SEEK function to jump into the scene if you know the timeline.

Other Functions: It supports online services such as online radio, youtube, RSS, torrent, etc.

I would rate this NMT 8.5 out of 10. Hopefully the next firmware will improve on the media supports and also improve on the loading speed. Otherwise, this is a 10 out of 10 product.

4 months of testing, I have never had a crash on this NMT and I've tested at least continously playing for 4 - 5 hours. No problem with heating as long as you are staying in a cool location (it has a built in fan too).

Does DTS vs DD really something that matters ?

Prior to this .. I'd always mistaken that DTS is actually belong to the same company as Dolby. Well it's not. This is a confession of a first time owner of a DTS/DD capabler AVR, the Harmon Kardon AVR1550. Honestly when playing a DTS and DD DVD movie .. i couldn't tell a difference between the two format. Both having a 5.1 Surround ... although from what is written in the Internet ... DTS is supposely superior due to higher bitrate or whatever that is .. still I couldn't tell a difference.

I'm not really a movie junkies per se, but I am a hardcore PS2 gamer whenever I'm off work. Unfortunately PS2 Pro Logic II, DTS or DD are scarce and even if those games that have it .. it's only during cut scenes. Who dig a cut scenes anyway ? Perhaps if it was full game .. then probably i would have notice the subtle differences.

But I do notice a huge difference in audio fidelity if I'm watching those movies without 5.1 surround. It sounded flat ... so no umpph .. Hence, what they shouldn't compare between DD or DTS ... it should be what AVR and what Speaker combination that counts. =)

Acoustic Treatment

Acoustic Treatment is crucial for all types of rooms that has sound system installed. Without proper acoustic treatment, you are listening to the "room" rather than listening to the sound system. Sound waves travel in all direction and if not treated correct, can create echoes, reverberation, resonance and reflection. No matter how good your sound system is, you are actually listening to the room more than listening to your expensive sound system.

I am not going to talk about soundproofing here. Meaning to say isolate sound from your next door neighbour or building a sound tight room. What I will be explaining in this post is to simply explain the basic acoustic treatment you can do to improve your Home Theater Room.

To make things simple, I will just briefly talk about 3 types of acoustic panels that will help you with your home theater room. The three types are Sound Diffuser, Sound Absorber and Bass Trapper.

Diffusor does not absorbs the audio waves but diffuses the waves and spread it out into different directions in your home theater room. It prevents audio waves from travelling/reflecting to the listener directly which creates hot spots or nulls in the room. It widens the sweet-spot in your room, thus making the room sounds wider than it physically is which in term give you more 3D sense of openness. DIY product can be egg trays which is really cheap but doesn't look really nice in a well designed home theater room.

Application: First reflective point for the front speakrs. Side walls, Ceiling, behind speakers or behind audience.

Absober simply absorb audio waves and it is non reflective like diffusor. It is effective in alleviating slap and flutter echo. Effective use of absorber can turn a huge room into a suitable acoustic environment. The two most commonly-used sound absorption materials are high-quality acoustic foam and specialized acoustic fiberglass. Not the stuff you can easily get from IKEA or your local hardware shops. I've tried using local hardware shops material like high density rock wool and DIY the panels myself. But the cost per piece is almost the same as those professional panels made by Auralex. Plus, the weight of the DIY panel is so much heavier and you can't really get the equal standard of each panels. Plus mounting the DIY panel onto the wall needs drilling whereas Auralex product comes with a special glue where you can simply apply a single dot on each corner and it will stick on all surface strongly.

Application: Behind Audience, Side or behind Speakers depending on the room layout.

Bass trap acts almost like acoustic absorber that functions to capture low frequency audio waves. Low frequency audio waves are very long and strong which is also the hardest to control. You can either block its transmission or absorb it to clean up the low frequency within a room. Improper treatment of low frequency will affect the sounding from the bass driver of the speaker or subwoofer. Bass traps provide a means to control room reverberations at low frequencies, a part of the audible bandwidth especially troublesome when critical listening venues are located in small rooms. Controlling low frequency audio waves is harder than controlling mid or high frequency waves. With Auralex bass trap, you can be rest assured to get the right solution because of the material used in Auralex bass traps.

Application: Corners

Conclusion, to properly treat your home theater room, you first need to know what is the problem of the room. It is unncessary to stick the panels all over the room because you still need the sound waves to roam freely but in a controlled manner that can help them sound better at your sitting area.

Component Video

All conventional methods of sending an analog video signal from one device to another involve a few basic types of "information". These information are basically grouped as scan, brightness and color. Unlike RCA composite cable which carries a single lower-quality signal, the component cable which carries picture information as three separate higher-quality signals — typically luma and two chroma components. Another format is the S-Video which carries the video data as two separate signals, luma (luminance) and chroma (colour).

To sum it up, component gives you the best image quality compared to the other two. For most consumer-level application, an analog component cable is used while those higher end one tends to slowly move to it's digital counterpart. Component video is capable of carrying signals such as 480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p, and 1080i.

Why the need for quality component cable ?

A component cable works optimally if the cable manage to supply 75 ohms after noise attenuation or any impedance tolerance that might have occurred along the way. This is why quality component cables tends to have larger cables than those ciplak China ones. It's easier to control impedance tightly with a larger dimension cables instead of tiny one.

Second factor would be the shielding. Any video connector is susceptible to electrical noise which come from a variety of sources, which can be cause from transformers, computer and even florescent lights. The composition of the shield in a component video cable will determine how effective it is at preventing interference. Best type of composition would be a heavy braided coupled with a full-coverage foil such as aluminum.

To sum it up, a cable with tight impedance tolerance, effective shielding, adequately-sized for the run and terminated with mechanically solid connectors that make good contact with the equipment jacks and don't do too much to alter the impedance of the whole assembly will outperform anything else on the market.

HDMI = High Definition Multimedia Interface is a audio/video interface capable of transmitting uncompressed digital streams at very high speed (up to 10.2 Gbits/sec). So it's a high speed audio/video cable ...So?

The Apollo is built into the same casework as the Rega Planet, with one key difference: The new player's transport holds the disc with a three-point ball chuck instead of a magnetic puck. That means the motor has less mass to spin, so the disc can accelerate and decelerate with greater ease. It also means that Rega's already elegant transport lid is now a single, undisturbed expanse of smoked Plexiglas-which looks very nice indeed.

The Apollo's transport, manufactured by Sanyo, is compliantly suspended from the upper portion of Rega's standard chassis of cast aluminum alloy. The D/A converter is Wolfson's top-of-the-line WM8740, a dual-differential chip that operates in sigma-delta mode and supports word lengths of up to 24 bits. The output section, which is said to apply class-A amplification to a digital source component in an entirely new way, is Rega's own design.

Apart from all that, the Apollo is a straightforward thing, with a front-mounted board for the logic bits and a single main circuit board for all the rest, fastened to the bottom of the chassis alongside the smallish toroidal mains transformer. RCA and optical digital output jacks are on the rear panel for those who wish to use an outboard DAC, as well as the usual pair of phono jacks for line-level analog output. In addition to the mains switch, the front panel has only the most basic start, stop, and track-advance buttons, while those and a full brace of other user controls appear on the nicely styled remote handset-including a button that can be used to kill the display lights. To jump ahead just a bit: As with the same feature on recent CD players from Naim Audio, that last one really did make an audible difference for the better; all of my comments on sound quality below refer to the Apollo's performance with its display dark.

There is only one little tiny catch on Apollo, that is when a disc is loaded and the transport door closes, the player does not respond further. It will wait for around 5 seconds or so before you can press the PLAY button to start reading the track. The culprit, if you want to call it that, is the new Cambridge-sourced chipset and its attendant surplus of memory: Each time the user loads a new disc, the Apollo reads the whole of the CD's subcode data into memory, analyzes it (footnote 1) and then selects the most appropriate of four levels of error correction. That way, the music is never overcorrected per se, and the integrity of the original datastream is kept intact to the greatest extent possible.

Apollo sounds "Cleaner" as compared to few of the products I have heard. It is more "revealing" and speak out most of the tiny details within the CD track. I can now hear "more" on Apollo than other lower end CD player ( I mean audiophile range CD Player here; not the consumer brand DVD or cd player that you get from the electrical shop that sells fridge and aircond).

Be warned when you feed Apollo with recorded CD media or even odinary CD from the shop. Noises and even some background sound are visible. You can straight away tell if the CD media is original or not or should I say, good recording or bad. At times, I feel Apollo sounds a little too crisp in the high side. More and more people are moving the cinema into their own house by building a Home Theater Room or integrating a set of home theater in their living room. There are many good reasons of doing so. Benefits being you can enjoy a movie at the comfort of house, pause the playback anytime you like when you need a toilet break, you don't have to pay for the VIP seat in the cinema and yet get a VIP seat in the best viewing seat or sofa. No more searching for parking, no need to worry about security when walking to the carpark after dark, no need to worry about the dirty seats in the cinema or oily smell on the headrest, no need to worry about paying extra on beverage and snacks, no need to worry about the dirty toilet when you need one, and lots more ...

Sound System in Cineplex is not always well maintain. Especially when you go to cineplex in Kuching where sound system are not being well maintained. Even the projector are suffering from dead lamp problem because of budget issues I guess. Noisy or broken sound are travelling everywhere in the cineplex. Very unfortunate that good recorded sound are not being output effectively. This is not how good sound is supposed to be feeded.

With your own sound system, you can control the sound stage and sound effect at a press of buttons on the AV Receiver. You can also adjust the ideal volume according to your hearing preference; increase the subwoofer level to give you more punch and low frequency (vibration in the room) whenever you like it. And the best thing of having a home theater at home is you can pay for the cost of a single DVD (RM6 ~ RM 59.90 depending on the quality) and the whole family can enjoy it together anytime you want. No need to wait for showtimes or queue up or stuck in the jam to get the tickets.

The pictures attached in this article are taken from my own HT room. DIY myself and almost completed but still need to add some acoustic treatment to the wall to improve sound quality by increasing sound stage while reducing stray sound reflection. A few final touch up and wall mount the rear speakers at the appropriate height once I've ran the speaker wiring. 1 Pair of floor stander for home theater, 1 unit for center. The extra pair of bookshelf speakers are for stereo system.

The room used to be part of my living room area and I partitioned it up to reduce the living area since I don't need such a big living area. Bigger living area means I need to have more furniture. After partitioned, it gives me a 15feet x 9feet home entertainment room. Got myself a two-seaters sofa for RM799. The two sliding doors are made of solid wood but I've laminated it with rock wool to improve sound proofing. Behind the curtain are my side entrance and windows. With the thick curtain, I am able to hide the doors and windows as well as improve acoustic to the room by reducing echo effect. Subwoofer is placed behind the sofa out of visibility.

All audio/video output from PS2, DVD Players, Satellite Receiver, Media PC are connected to the Denon AVR-1909 AV Receiver. Video from PS2, LG DVD are feeded via component video cable while the rest of the video source are connected via composite (analog RCA) cable. Harmon Kardon AVR 1550 Review - Affordable Classic AVR

Prior to this, I've never seen the Harmon Kardon brand being anywhere in Malaysia except West Malaysia. Particularly the audio shop at Sungai Wang .. or Harvey Norman would carry HK. I must admit that I'm not particularly familiar with AVR, Speakers or quality cables and stuff. I was more of a photographer than an audiophile freak. But I knew quality stuff when I see it or in this case hear it :)

Let me go way back to my university time, when I first bought a computer that came with a standard sound card and speaker .. I was less than thrilled. Back then I couldn't differentiate what's the fuss with having a quality sound card and speaker would do to enhance the overall enjoyment of the medium. Until I got my hand on counter strike. It was all the rage back then, a game whereby knowing where enemy is audibly makes a difference between life and death (in the game anyway).

I was using consumer level home theater system from Sony and some how the thing just sounded loud .. without clarity. The bass is good .. but I just couldn't hear what the actor was saying with that bass and treble and ultimately killing the mood of the movie. Luckily my friend just opened a HT shop that carry mid to high end HT system which might not be too familiar to hear unless you really are an audiophile freak. Over here general population only know Sony, LG, Samsung .. but when it comes to sonic enjoyment .. the names of Denon, Marantz and HK are synonymous with the terms "high quality sound". It wasn't long before I got my hands on the HK AVR 1550 which suited my tight budget.

The AVR was paired with a 5.1 Epiphany Speakers which looks small but really solid and heavy plus it packs a lot of punches. Each of the Epiphany speakers consist of 2 sub speakers .. so basically you will have 10 speakers and 1 sub woofer in one single package. Pretty neat.

The AVR is fairly simplistic and quite easy to setup. This is a 2002 model so don't expect to see a HDMI connector here. :) I didn't have a LCD .. so obviously I don't need HDMI for now. Astro programming just really sucks on a LCD and Plasma anyway unless they go HD with their broadcasting. We'll just have to wait for Measat 10 for that to happen.

Onced setup I whipped out my favourite movie on DVD, the Matrix Reloaded, upon playing it the AVR automatically set itself to DTS depending on the DVD disc. You will need an optical cable to get DTS to be activated. When I press play, as I sink down on my sofa .. my heart was pounding at the clarity and fantastic boom from the subwoofer whenever Keanu Reeves pulls the trigger on his gun. Hehe .. man I love this movie.

Besides movies, I also enjoyed playing my HDD enabled PS2 console. Prior to this, I never hear how Dolby Pro Logic II sound like... lol. Again with the optical cable I could enjoy PL II on certain number of games. Do take note that PS2 games usually have the PL II enabled mostly on cutscenes only. One fine example is the GT4. The sound of roaring VTEC on a 03 DC5 never sound sweeter. =)

Marantz CD5003 CD Player

Replacement of the Marantz CD5001 (5 Stars What Hifi Award) entry level CD player has been replaced by the new year 2009 CD5003.

The MSRP of this again 5 Stars What Hifi award CD Player is RM 1,299. The design is major change from CD5001 with the new look of Marantz flagship SA-7S1 CD Player that retails at RM 24,999.

Loud means Good??

It is funny we always hear people who bought consumer brands sound system for a price ranging from RM699 to RM 5,000 showing off on how loud their system can achieve. They have no clue on what sound system or music system means to them. If they want LOUD loudspeakers, why don't just get those Big Black Box Speakers from P.R.C. that cost them RM199 a pair and blast the ear drums out of their neighbours.

Then comes another set of tiny speakers system that cost you over RM3500 a set that simply asking buyer to pay for their high priced advertisement fee. How can such a small speaker do anything good other than producing high frequency sound? Sorry no mid tone or low bass. All high out with only a subwoofer to conpensate for the mid and low. Why would somebody spends their money in this?

Behind the beautiful black finish with a touch of modern look lies compressed or recycle wood and plastic. They may look big and solid but it is light and hollow. When you send one to the service center, you usually get the same answer "I'm sorry but the main circuit board needs replacement" which usually cost you 60% of the new product. And most of all, they will charge you RM80 to RM120 regardless if you are going to repair it or not. Ouch !!

So, think twice before you consider buying these consumer brands simply because they are "cheap"? or "CHEAP"??

Nevertheless, Denon has never neglected the lower end market and by providing entry-level models such as this AVR-1509 at an affordable price of RM1,799 msrp, most of us can enjoy quality sound from this solid built AV Receiver without worrying a bigger hole in our wallet.

Like the previous model AVR-1508, this is a 7 channels AV Receiver that produces 75watts (8 ohms) x 7 channels power.
